Tanah Lot is an island of Indonesia located on the island of Bali which is built on a Hindu temple Pura Tanah Lot (literally "The temple of Tanah Lot"). It is a place of pilgrimage and a popular place for tourists and photographes1.
Tanah Lot means "Land of the Sea" in balinais2. Located in Tabanan Regency about 20 km from Denpasar, it stands on a battered by the waves of the ocean island.
Tanah Lot is the work of Nirartha, a priest of the 15th century. Legend has it that during a trip he would have discovered this beautiful rocky island and it would be installed. Fishermen seeing him would have brought presents. After spending the night Nirartha have found this place conducive to worship the god of the sea and then asked the fishermen to build a sanctuaire1.
The Tanah Lot temple built and became a reference in Balinese mythology. This is one of seven sea temples in Bali. These seven temples are built along the coast so that we can always see the next since the previous. They are all Hindu style.
At the foot of the rocky island sea snakes are supposed to protect the temple from evil spirits and intruders. According to legend, a giant serpent created with scarf Nirartha would protect the temple.
